Character creator, cell customization and emotes are confirmed for The Escapists 3, each traced to official copy — plus what the trailer's inmates really show.

FAQ

Can you customize your character in The Escapists 3?
Yes. A character creator is confirmed for the 2027 release — the Steam page's customization section is headlined 'Make your inmate your own', and announcement coverage says standardized skeleton animations are what make custom appearances possible. The depth of the options has not been shown yet.
Can you customize your cell in The Escapists 3?
Yes. Cell customization is confirmed — the official Steam page invites players to 'customise your cell'. What the system lets you place, and whether placed items affect gameplay, has not been detailed.
Are there emotes in The Escapists 3?
Emotes are confirmed as part of the announcement's customization suite, alongside the character creator and cell customization. The actual list of emotes has not been published.
Are the inmates in The Escapists 3 named?
No character names or biographies have been announced. Team17 confirms each of the five launch prisons has its own characters, but none are named yet. The distinct inmates seen in the announcement trailer are cinematic cast, not a confirmed playable roster.
Can you play as the characters from the trailer?
Unconfirmed. The 62-second announcement trailer is pure cinematic — the bearded inmate in the pink bobble hat and the purple-haired inmate are staged performances. Whether any named or unlockable characters exist beyond your created inmate has not been addressed.
Are there classes that lock your character's build?
No class locks are confirmed. The XP skill system lets you pick the skills you want with no job gating, and unlocked skills carry across prisons. A separate redesigned jobs system pays wages — working a job is income, not a build lock.

Can You Customize Your Character in The Escapists 3?

Yes — customization is one of the officially confirmed feature pillars. The October 2026 announcement listed three pieces: a character creator, cell customization, and emotes. The Steam page devotes its own section to it, headlined “Make your inmate your own,” and even suggests you “customise your cell” while you are at it. The full confirmed-feature ledger lives in everything we know so far.

What none of that specifies yet is scope. There are no screens of the creator interface, no list of sliders or presets, no clothing catalogue, and no word on whether emotes are cosmetic or mechanical. That is normal for an announcement-phase reveal, so this page keeps a hard line between what is confirmed and what the trailer merely shows.

Why a Character Creator Is Possible Now

The older games drew every inmate as a hand-made sprite, which is one reason custom appearances never happened. Announcement press coverage explains the change: characters are now animated on standardized skeletons, so a custom hairstyle or outfit no longer requires redrawing sprite sheets for every combination. The creator is not a bolted-on menu — it falls directly out of the same 3D rebuild as the physics sandbox and the fixed camera, as covered in our 3D gameplay analysis.

How deep the creator goes is unconfirmed: preset faces versus sliders, hair and headwear options, body types, and whether the inmates other players see in online co-op reflect your customized look are all open questions the multiplayer guide is tracking.

The Inmates the Trailer Shows

The Escapists 3 night trailer frame of three inmates with purple pigtail buns, brown hair and a pink bobble hat walking a fence line under floodlights

Three inmates walk the night fence line — purple buns, brown hair, pink bobble hat — each staged as an individual rather than a clone (~0:21).

A beat later, one inmate is face-down and three react — the trailer’s comedy is carried by these small character animations (~0:23).

The yard and fence scenes are the best look yet at how individual the inmates read. Hairstyles run from purple pigtail buns to a brown mop to a bald head under a pink bobble hat; there is a broad bearded grump, a wiry instigator, and — in the corridor scenes — an elderly white-haired inmate. A daytime roll-call moment packs the courtyard with even more variety: headbands, eyepatches, even a captain’s hat on one head.

The essential caveat: these are cinematic performers, not a confirmed character list. Nothing in the official materials states that the beanie-wearing beardo or the purple-haired inmate exists as a playable or named character. They demonstrate art variety, not a roster — and any site telling you otherwise is inventing names. Our frame-by-frame trailer breakdown covers the reveal shot by shot.

Personality, Emotes, and Where the Line Sits

The pink-bobble-hat inmate mid-argument: eyebrows, beard, posture. Even background inmates get readable personalities (~0:25).

The Escapists 3 trailer frame of a purple-haired inmate brandishing a large makeshift blade while a bearded inmate holds up a blue toothbrush

The same standoff escalates — a makeshift blade appears, a toothbrush answers it. Escapists problem-solving, delivered cinematically (~0:27).

Emotes are confirmed; everything about them is not. The announcement named emotes as the third piece of the customization suite, and that is the extent of official information — no emote list, no wheel UI, no word on unlocks. The trailer’s confrontations, like the night argument above, show expressive gesturing, but staged cinema is not a demonstration of the emote system. Treat the two as related in spirit only until Team17 shows the actual interface.

Cell Customization: Your Own Corner of the Prison

The Escapists 3 corridor scene of an elderly white-haired inmate and a pink-bobble-hat inmate talking at the bars of a prison cell

An elderly inmate holds court at the cell bars — the interiors on show are the same cells the confirmed customization applies to (~0:55).

The second confirmed piece puts customization one layer out: your cell. The official copy invites you to “customise your cell,” which confirms the system exists without saying what it includes — furniture, posters, contraband stashes, or decorative touches are all unannounced. The trailer’s cell-block interiors, with beds, shelves and personal clutter, hint at how lived-in these spaces are — but a hint is all it is. Whether customized cells affect gameplay, or how they appear to visiting inmates in co-op, has not been addressed.

Five Prisons, Five Populations

The Escapists 3 top-down view of guards and sniffer dogs patrolling a kennel yard while a brown-haired inmate walks past the dog runs

Guards and sniffer dogs work the kennel run while an inmate strolls past — the staff side of a prison’s population (~0:53).

Characters here are not just the inmate you create. Team17 has confirmed that each of the five launch prisons has its own routines, characters and secrets — none of them named yet, and fan lists that claim otherwise are invented. The trailer backs the promise up visually: guards with distinct caps and builds, sniffer dogs, and inmate crowds that differ scene by scene. Your own inmate, meanwhile, is built by choice rather than class — the XP skill system has no job locks, and skills carry across all five facilities profiled in the five prisons overview.

What Is Not Confirmed About Characters

Everything on this list is currently unknown, and we will date every answer the moment it arrives:

  • Names and biographies for any inmate, guard, or warden.
  • The creator’s option depth — sliders, presets, clothing, hair, body types.
  • Multiplayer visibility — whether other players see your customized inmate in co-op.
  • The emote list and whether emotes do anything beyond expression.
  • Whether the trailer’s inmates exist in game as named, unlockable, or playable characters.
  • Whether appearance affects gameplay — stats, opinions, or guard suspicion.
