FAQ

Where can I watch The Escapists 3 announcement trailer?
On Team17's official YouTube channel, where it is titled "The Escapists 3 | Official Announcement Trailer". The same trailer was also distributed through the Triple-i Initiative showcase stream and the official PlayStation and ID@XBOX channels on October 8, 2026.
What does the trailer reveal?
It shows the chibi 3D art style in motion, escapes through vents and over fences, improvised tools such as a spoon, guard searchlight stealth, a dollhouse-style cutaway of a cell block, blanket gliders crossing the wall, a stone catacombs-like area, a laser-guarded hidden pool, and the 2027 release window with wishlist prompts.
Is the trailer footage actual gameplay?
Team17 has not labeled the footage, and no frame carries a HUD, interface elements, or a pre-alpha disclaimer. Treat it as a produced cinematic that represents the game's look; direct-feed gameplay has not been shown yet.
What does the trailer not show?
It carries no dialogue, no release date beyond "Coming 2027", no prison names, no price, no skill-tree or XP interface, and no multiplayer or split-screen footage. Those details remain unannounced as of October 10, 2026.
What rating does the trailer carry?
The video opens with a PEGI 12 rating card. The Xbox store page separately lists ESRB Teen (Violence). Full regional ratings for the final game have not been published yet.

What Does the Trailer Actually Show?

The announcement trailer that introduced The Escapists 3 on October 8, 2026 runs 62 seconds, carries no dialogue at all (the subtitle track is music and one vocal swell), and communicates everything through images. That makes it worth reading frame by frame rather than summarizing. Our announcement coverage already broke down the press release and store pages; this page is about the pictures themselves — what each sequence puts on screen, and which officially confirmed features the frames line up with.

Every image below is a screenshot from the official Team17 upload, taken for editorial analysis, with its timestamp noted. Where something is visible but unexplained, we say so — the trailer shows plenty and labels almost nothing.

How Does the Trailer Open?

The first frames are not 3D at all. A sepia, hand-drawn animation plays across a parchment-like screen (0:01): a blocky little inmate stands on a diving board above water while a shark waits below, heart floating over its head. It is the series’ oldest visual language — the crudely drawn escape plan — gone before you can ask what the plan is for.

The plan: one inmate, one diving board, one shark.

The punchline arrives at 0:06: the projector is real, and the students are not inmates but police officers in blue caps, notebooks out, while a white-mustached instructor walks them through documented escape attempts. The trailer frames its own subject as a guard-training lecture on how prisoners get out — and it doubles as the first moving demonstration of the chibi 3D art overhaul, with soft depth-of-field lighting the sprite-based predecessors never had. We put that overhaul in context in the 3D gameplay analysis.

Plot twist: the students are the guards.

Which Escape Routes Does the Trailer Show?

Four distinct escape images anchor the middle of the trailer. At 0:10 an inmate in a white vest crawls directly toward the camera through a square metal ventilation duct, tally marks scratched into the wall beside him and something green clipped in one hand. Vents are on the officially confirmed feature list, so the frame reads as that promise made visible.

Tally marks included. Vent escapes are officially back.

At 0:22 the crew is outside at night: four inmates regroup beneath a chain-link fence topped with razor wire while spotlights sweep the dark behind them — one drops down from the fence itself as the others look up. Then the boldest frame at 0:40: three inmates sail off a rooftop and over the outer wall on makeshift red blanket gliders, legs dangling. Roof-launched gliding is one of the officially announced vertical escape methods, and this is its debut in motion.

Blanket wings beat barbed wire.

At 0:41 the setting shifts underground: inmates walk mine cart rails between giant stone blocks, torchlight ahead, rubble-strewn walls behind. This appears to be the ancient catacombs zone named in the official announcement as one of the areas beyond the wall — though the trailer never says the word, so treat the identification as a visual match, not a labeled fact.

What Security Systems Are On Display?

The trailer is equally thorough about the people trying to stop you. At 0:14 guards run a cell shakedown with a K-9 dog sniffing under the bunk while an inmate watches through the bars; around 0:17 two guards find a freshly dug hole and peer into it one at a time, the trailer’s best silent gag. The systemic layer shows up at 0:34 in a top-down night shot: inmates press themselves against a roadside wall as flashlight cones sweep past, one of them frozen inside the beam. That is the street-level picture of the officially announced vision-cone skill, drawn cinematically — no interface, no meters.

Stay out of the cone.

The most important frame for returning players lands at 0:35: a full dollhouse cutaway of a cell block in 3D — beds, desks, floor grates in every cell, electronic door locks with status lights, and a red alert strip washing the wing in what looks like a lockdown. The series’ classic cross-section view survived the jump to three dimensions.

Security reaches its peak at 0:45 in a tiled indoor hidden swimming pool: a red laser skims across the water, a wall panel and lever wait mid-frame, towels sit neatly folded — and one inmate stands caught inside a glowing red trigger field while his crew hovers by the wall. The announcement materials explicitly promised secret areas such as the warden’s private pool, guarded by laser and lever puzzles; this frame is that sentence turned into a picture.

Lasers, a lever, and one very caught inmate.

What Do the Characters and Prisons Reveal?

Two quiet frames carry the customization story. At 0:26 a bearded inmate in a pink bobble hat proudly presents a blue spoon to the camera like a freshly pulled sword. Nobody says the word “crafting”, but the officially quoted line “a stolen fork = a career opportunity” and the confirmed roster of 120+ items and weapons make the joke legible — humble object, serious career.

One spoon, infinite possibilities.

At 0:48 the yard fills up: a roll call at dusk with dozens of inmates standing in painted squares, and no two alike — pompadours, hair buns, bobble hats, an eyepatch, a captain’s cap, different builds and skin tones. That is the confirmed character creator shown at scale, and the painted squares are the daily-routine loop the announcement described. Around 0:53 it also flashes a second, camp-style prison with rows of red-roofed huts — evidence that launch prisons span different archetypes, though no prison has been named in official material, and we will not repeat the speculative names on fan wikis. Verified prison facts live in the five prisons overview.

Every inmate a different character.

What Does the Trailer Confirm — and What Does It Not Answer?

The last image is the only one with words on it (0:57): the pixel-art title card, the tagline “Coming 2027”, a “Wishlist Now” prompt, and icons for Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox and PS5 beside the Team17 logo.

Coming 2027 — wishlists are open.

Confirmed by the trailer: the chibi 3D art direction in motion; escapes via vents, fences and gliders; searchlight and laser security; a hidden pool area with lever-style interaction; the dollhouse cutaway view; large-scale character customization; at least two visually distinct prison styles; the 2027 window; and live wishlist pages on all four announced platforms.

Not answered: an exact release date, a price, any prison name, any look at the XP skill tree interface, any multiplayer or split-screen footage, and any dialogue — the film says nothing out loud. Notably, no frame carries a “pre-alpha” label or footage disclaimer, and none shows a HUD, so how closely the final game matches these images remains an open question until Team17 shows direct-feed gameplay. The release date tracker and everything-we-know fact base stay updated as answers arrive.
