How Does the XP Skill System Work?
The confirmed pitch is one sentence from the game’s own store page: “Earn XP as you play, unlock new skills and tailor your inmate to the way you want to escape.” Three things are nailed down in it. XP comes from playing, not from a separate minigame. Unlocks are chosen, not automatic — the system is explicitly built around shaping your inmate for a specific escape style. And there are no class locks: nothing in the confirmed materials stops a player from combining whatever skills fit the plan.
Beyond that, the details are still sealed. The 62-second announcement trailer is pure cinematics — watched end to end, it contains no skill-tree menu, no XP bar, no unlock screen — so the size of the tree, the cost curve, and the UI are all unknown. This page goes deep on everything that is confirmed; the one-paragraph summary version lives in our 3D gameplay overview, and the full confirmed-features ledger is in everything we know so far.
What the system responds to is visible in every frame of the reveal: prisons that watch you constantly.

A guard and sniffer dog sweep a cell while an inmate’s belongings lie open — the constant surveillance your skills have to beat (0:13).
Vision Cones: Reading the Prison’s Sight Lines
The first confirmed skill is informational, and it is the one the trailer actually shows. In the reveal’s stealth sequence, translucent white cones fan out from patrolling guards across the road, and inmates pick their way around the edges of the light.

Translucent vision cones spread from a guard patrol on a prison road while inmates keep to the grass (0:33).

One cone reaches far down the road — the nearest inmate is a step from being seen (0:34).
Press coverage of the announcement describes this skill as letting you see the sight lines of guards and security cameras — the cones on screen are the trailer’s own visualization of the mechanic, though whether the in-game render matches this cinematic look is something hands-on previews will confirm. Either way, the design logic is easy to read. In older entries, patrol routes were something you memorized by observation and trial and error. Here, the stealth layer becomes readable information: who can see the yard, which corridor is blind, how long a gap stays open. Our overview argues the fixed camera already keeps the tactical picture legible — this skill completes that loop by revealing how the space watches you back. That matters in a game where detection assets are everywhere, from sniffer dogs to the floodlights below.
Hinge Buster: the Confirmed Door-Destruction Skill
The second confirmed skill is the opposite of subtle. Hinge Buster rips an entire door off its hinges, and the announcement coverage stresses that it is extremely loud. That noise is the design: a sabotage tool with an alarm built in as a cost. Quiet skills gather information; Hinge Buster deletes an obstacle and summons an audience.
Doors carry real weight now that prisons are full 3D spaces with hinged geometry — a removed door is not a sprite toggling open but a physical barrier gone. The trailer never shows the skill being performed on screen, so its animation, speed, and cooldown are unknown; what the reveal does show is the kind of barrier it exists for.

A locked cell front with a green indicator light — exactly the kind of barrier a door-busting skill exists to remove (0:55).
What Cross-Prison Carryover Changes
Team17 has confirmed that unlocked skills carry across prisons. That single line changes the shape of progression. The older games effectively made each prison a fresh climb; here, your abilities persist across facilities, turning the skill tree into a long-term investment that five confirmed launch prisons will all pay into. A skill earned in the first facility is still yours in the fifth, which should make each successive escape plan start from a stronger, more personal toolkit.
What carryover does not answer: whether XP itself resets per prison, whether there is a cap on total unlocks, or whether later facilities gate skill tiers. None of that is announced. The prisons themselves — each with distinct routines, characters, and secrets — are profiled in the five prisons overview.

The watchtower’s searchlights define the night shift of prison security — every facility will read your skills differently (0:29).
No Class Locks: How Skills Meet Multiplayer
Because nothing locks skills to jobs or classes, multiplayer gets an obvious texture. Confirmed: two-player local split screen and up to four players online, with the freedom to divide labor however the group likes. The predictable pattern — one player investing in information skills like vision cones while another goes loud with Hinge Buster — is a reasonable expectation of how free picks get used, not something Team17 has demonstrated. We will say so again when they do. The full picture of modes and crossplay is in the multiplayer guide.
Do the Old Strength, Speed and Intellect Stats Return?
Unconfirmed, in both directions. The previous games built escapes on three trainable stats plus an inmate opinion system; official materials for the new game describe only the XP skill system and are silent on whether the stat triangle, stat training, or opinions survive alongside it. We are not going to presume either way — when Team17 addresses it, this section gets the answer with a date attached.
What to Expect From the Full Skill Tree
Everything above is confirmed; this closing section is clearly labeled expectation. Only two skills have been named out of what is presumably a larger tree, so more reveals between now and the 2027 launch window are likely. Expect the unlock UI, XP pacing, and the rest of the tree to surface in previews rather than the announcement cycle — the reveal trailer held none of it. Context for how the game was presented, including the 3D overhaul this system lives in, is in the announcement breakdown. This page will grow with every official detail, each entry dated.
